AI Search

Find experts by describing what you're looking for in plain language. Learn how AI Search works and how to get the best results.

AI Search lets you find experts by describing what you're looking for in plain language — no need to build a search from keywords and filters manually. Describe what you need as you would to a colleague, and ExpertInsight translates that into a search result using appropriate keywords and filters.

AI Search works alongside the existing filter-based search. You can switch between the two at any time.

Getting Started

  1. Click AI Search in the top right of the Expert Search bar. The AI Search panel opens on the right side of the screen.

  2. Type what you're looking for in plain language. For example: "leading rheumatologists focused on lupus in the United States".

  3. ExpertInsight applies the relevant filters and keywords and returns matching experts in the main view.

  4. Continue the conversation to refine your results — add criteria, remove criteria, or shift focus. Each follow-up builds on the previous one.

  5. Close the panel at any time to return to the standard filter view. The filters applied by AI Search remain active in the search.

What AI Search Can Do

  • Plain language queries — Describe your search as you would to a colleague. No filter knowledge required.

  • Conversational refinement — Follow up on a search to adjust, narrow, or expand criteria. The context of the previous turn is carried forward.

  • Personalization — Understands your personal ExpertInsight settings. Phrases like "in my territory", "my locations of interest", "my companies", and "my favourite experts" are recognised and applied directly from your settings.

  • Medical keyword mapping — Clinical terms are automatically mapped to the appropriate MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms used in the product.

  • Claims codes mapping — Diagnosis and treatment descriptions are automatically mapped to the relevant ICD codes when a claims-based search would yield better results.

  • English language input — AI Search is optimised for English. Use plain language, medical terminology, or everyday phrases — no precise filter names or technical keywords required. Queries in other languages may work due to the nature of the underlying large language model, but results have not been verified or tested and MeSH term and ICD code mapping cannot be guaranteed in non-English languages.

  • Conversation history — All past AI Search conversations are saved. Return to any previous conversation to re-apply the search it produced or continue refining from where you left off.

  • Result feedback — Rate results with a thumbs up or down and add written comments to help improve results over time.

Tips for Better Results

  • Use plain language, not filter names. "Pulmonologists in Germany who have published on SGLT2 inhibitors" works better than trying to replicate a filter combination.

  • Refine rather than restart. If the first result isn't right, add one more constraint or shift the focus in a follow-up message. Continuing the conversation often gets you there faster than starting over.

  • Try again if results seem unexpected. AI Search has a degree of natural variability — the same question asked twice can occasionally produce a different result.

  • Start broad, then narrow. Very specific constraints — narrow publication date ranges, rare specialties — can limit results significantly. Broadening the question first and refining from there usually works better.

  • Use full terms, not abbreviations. AI Search understands full medical terminology well. Abbreviations may not always be interpreted as expected — spelling out the term typically produces better results.

  • Reference your settings naturally. You don't need to use exact filter names. Phrases like "in my territory", "my locations of interest", "my companies", and "my favourite experts" are all understood and applied directly from your personalisation settings.

Things to Know

Results can vary. AI Search interprets your intent and makes judgements about the most relevant filters and search terms. Asking the same question twice may occasionally produce slightly different results. This is expected behaviour. If a particular result set is valuable, note the filters applied or save the search to preserve it.

AI Search is a starting point. It is designed for exploration and iteration — not precise, fixed-output lookup. For queries where you need exact, reproducible results, the existing filter-based search gives you full control.

AI Search stays within ExpertInsight's search capabilities. Results come from the same search engine and data as the rest of ExpertInsight. AI Search cannot surface data that the existing search cannot find.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AI Search replace the existing search? No. The existing keyword and filter search is completely unchanged. AI Search is an additional way to start a search — you can continue building searches manually exactly as before.

How does AI Search produce results — is it generating content or searching? AI Search interprets your plain language description and applies filters and keywords within ExpertInsight's existing search system. Results come from the same search engine and the same underlying expert data. AI Search cannot return results that the existing search couldn't find — it is bound by the same capabilities and data.

Will I always get the same results if I ask the same question? Not necessarily. AI Search is powered by a language model, which has a degree of natural variability in how it interprets input. The same question asked twice may produce slightly different filter interpretations or result sets. This is expected behaviour. If a particular result set is useful, note the filters applied — or re-apply the search directly from your conversation history.

What if AI Search seems to misunderstand my question? Because AI Search interprets intent rather than executing a fixed command, results will occasionally be unexpected. If the result is clearly off-target, rephrasing or adding more context usually resolves it — or simply try the same question again. The existing filter-based search is always available as a fallback for precise queries.

Are my past conversations saved? Yes. All AI Search conversations are stored. You can return to any past conversation, re-apply the search it produced, or continue from where you left off.

Does it work in languages other than English? English is the only supported language. Due to the nature of the underlying large language model, queries in other languages may work — but performance has not been formally tested or verified. MeSH term and ICD code mapping in languages other than English cannot be guaranteed. Use of AI Search in languages other than English is at your own risk.

Does AI Search understand medical terminology and abbreviations? It understands full medical terminology well and maps clinical terms to MeSH equivalents and ICD codes automatically. Abbreviations may not always be interpreted correctly — using the full term typically produces better results.

Can AI Search use my personalisation settings? Yes, as long as your personalisation settings are configured in ExpertInsight. Phrases like "my territory", "my locations of interest", "my companies", and "my favourite experts" are all recognised and applied from your settings.

What if the results aren't quite right? Continue the conversation — refine your description, add or remove criteria, and AI Search will adjust accordingly. If results seem off, rephrasing or adding more context usually helps. The existing filter-based search is always available as a fallback.

Do I need to do anything to get access? No. AI Search is available automatically to all ExpertInsight customers. No configuration, upgrade, or opt-in is required — unless your organisation has opted out. If AI Search is not visible to you, contact your Customer Success Manager.

Can AI Search be disabled for our organisation? Yes. AI Search can be disabled for your organisation if you have contractual or policy requirements around AI features. When disabled, AI Search will not be available to use within your organisation. To request this, please contact your Customer Success Manager.

Is there an additional cost? No. AI Search is included in your existing ExpertInsight access at no additional cost.

Is my search data used to train AI models? No. Your search data is not used to train AI models.

Is there a legal disclaimer? Yes. An in-product disclaimer is displayed at the bottom of the AI Search panel at all times: "AI Search" uses artificial intelligence to assist you. Responses and searches are generated automatically based on your input. For specific concerns or complex issues, please contact your CSM or Monocl commercial representative for further assistance.
